FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University men's basketball team fell 68-64 to Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Mahoney Arena. The Gaels got within two points in the final minute but could not close the gap in the defeat. Freshman

THE RUNDOWN
Fairfield's largest lead of the first half came just over the midway point as top scorer Deon Perry's free throws made the score 22-13 with 9:11 remaining. Iona chipped away and tied the score less than six minutes later on a three ball from the wing by junior
Christian Winborne that knotted the game at 26-26 with 3:28 to play. Fairfield regained the lead and held a four point advantage into the break.
Â
It was a one possession game for the first 8:37 until Perry drained a three to give Fairfield a 47-43 lead. A couple minutes later the home team doubled its advantage to eight with 10:07 on the clock following a steal and layup by Louis Bleechmore. Down seven with three minutes to play, Iona forged a 7-2 run to cut it within two with 20 seconds left. After junior
Yaphet Moundi converted a second chance opportunity, the Gaels defense appeared to cause a turnover that would give them the ball and a chance to tie or take the lead. The Fairfield bench called timeout just before to maintain possession. The two teams traded points, free throws for the Stags and a length of the court drive to the rim by Njie with 12 ticks left. Fairfield hit two more free throws to meet the final margin as the Gaels could not convert and fell by four on the road.
