Iona MBB Falls Short vs. Quinnipiac, 63-62

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - A second half scoring drought led to Iona University men's basketball's 63-62 loss to Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. Senior Dejour Reaves recorded his first Division I double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and junior Luke Jungers added 10 first half points to lead the Gaels.

THE RUNDOWN

The Maroon & Gold got off to a fast start, turning an early 6-2 deficit into a 22-9 lead with its 20-3 run.  Jungers scored all 10 of his points during the 6:46 stretch with a pair of three-pointers and a pair of layups. Iona shot 8-for-14 from the field with two additional long distance connections from rookie Justin Menard. The Gaels ratcheted up the defense, holding the Bobcats to 1-for-8 shooting with four turnovers in building the 13 point advantage.

The home team held a 14 point lead with 7:51 left in the frame before the Bobcats chipped away and closed to within two points with 45 ticks on the clock. The 19-7 run saw Iona shoot just 3-for-10 from the field. Junior James Patterson closed the scoring in the half with a bucket inside and Iona led 37-33 at the half.

Iona had a strong start to the second half, scoring the first eight points with Reaves tallying three straight points in the paint and an assist on a punctuation mark dunk from senior Clarence Rupert. Up 10 following another Reaves layup, the Gaels went cold on the offensive end, going scoreless for a 6:14 stretch. Quinnipiac slowly cut into the deficit, scoring 11 straight points to earn its first lead since early in the first half. Menard and Reaves ended the drought with a three pointer and step back jumper to put Iona ahead by four with 6:30 left. The Bobcats used a 7-0 run to go ahead 57-54 less than two and a half minutes later.   The visitors led by five with 63 seconds left. Reaves hit two free throws on the Gaels next possession to cut it to three. After rookie Adam Njie Jr. stole the inbounds pass, Reaves put home his own miss to make it a one point game with just over seven seconds left. Iona quickly fouled and corralled the rebound on a missed free throw on the front end of a one and one. A last second shot attempt fell short, leaving the Maroon & Gold with the one point defeat.
