FAIRFIELD, CT — The Iona University men's soccer team hit the road to first-place Sacred Heart on Wednesday evening, playing to a 0-0 draw in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Gaels held a 15-11 advantage for shots over the Pioneers at Park Ave Field.

Fernando Alves Schmelz registered a season-high five saves for the Maroon & Gold, all coming in the second half. Sophomore
Alvaro Maneiro recorded a game-high six saves.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona dictated the pace in the opening half, holding a 6-0 margin for shot attempts in the first 24 minutes of action. Sacred Heart's Luca Marinelli made two saves in the 23
rd and 24
th minute on shot attempts from Maneiro. The Gaels had one more look on goal in the 44
th minute as Maneiro fired a shot to the lower left-hand side that was stopped by Marinelli.
Iona's defense only surrendered two shot attempts in the opening half as the Pioneers had two attempts miss off target in the final five minutes.
Sacred Heart kicked up the intensity out of the halftime break, outshooting Iona 6-2 in the first 14 minutes of the second half. Schemlz made stops three stops for the Gaels in the 57
th and 59
th minute to hold the Pioneers.
Iona held a 5-3 margin for shots in the final 18 minutes of action. The best chance for the Gaels came in the 80
th minute as Maneiro made a charge just outside the 18-yard box and sent a the ball to the top left hand corner but Marinelli made a diving stop to hold the score at 0-0 as both teams earned a point in league action.
