GAME SUMMARY
In the final home game of the regular season, the Gaels set the tone early off the opening draw with a free kick opportunity just 70 seconds into the game. A shot from Maneiro just outside the 18-yard box was knocked down by the Mountaineers wall. Morandi was there to collect the rebound and fired a high right-footed shot into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
The Gaels looked to continue the pace on the offensive end, firing two more shots on goal over the next but Julian Marcos was there to make the saves for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's caught a break in the 40th minute, intercepting a cross field pass near midfield that lead to a three-on-two breakaway. Jack Kehoe led the breakaway chance dribbling all the way into the 18-yard box and sent a pass out to the right for Luciano Schiaffini to bury the low shot to the back left corner of the goal to tie the game 1-1 before the halftime break.
Iona regained control in the second half as Mancheno sent a long pass just near midfield in the 58th minute to Morandi who used no look feed out to Bolur. The rookie dribbled past the Mountaineers back line and buried the go-ahead goal for the Gaels.
Momentum carried over for the Gaels, drawing a foul inside the 18-yard box just three minutes later prompting a penalty kick. Maneiro stepped back and rifled the shot past the diving reach of Marcos for the 3-1 advantage.
The Mountaineers looked for one final push on the offensive end but Alves Schmelz was there with saves in the 66th and 87th minute to hold the final score to cap the regular season slate at Mazzella Field.
