ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona University men's lacrosse team faced off with Navy in its first away bout in program history at noon from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. The Gaels counted five players who scored or assisted for their first time in Maroon & Gold, but a blistering first and fourth quarters from the hosts would make the difference as Iona dropped the tilt 22-9.
AS IT HAPPENED
Navy took an early two-goal lead, but
Cullen Lawry would once again open the scoring for the Gaels, with
Vincenzo Gramaglia delivering an assist straight from the face-off X. Minutes later on a sweeping solo run into the front of goal,
Jake Riglietti brought the game even at 2-2, tallying his first career goal. Â
Â
The Midshipmen would pull away, scoring eight straight to make it 10-2 at the end of the quarter, converting their tenth goal up a man after a penalty from the Maroon & Gold. Â
Â
Cullen Lawry struck again to start the second quarter, combining with
Jake Riglietti. The two sides then traded two-point runs, with Navy scoring a couple before
Francesco Raso cut through the Mids' defense for
Kolbe Curtin who slotted the ball home for his first career goal on an extra-man goal.
Jake Riglietti would follow with his second of the afternoon before the end of the half.Â
Â
Back from the break, another two unanswered from the hosts hit the back of the net before Lawry absorbed contact and completed his hat trick. A 6-0 run from the Midshipmen to make it 20-6 through the fourth quarter was halted by a pair of
Beckett Foley goals, the initial being the McKinney, Texas native's career-first, and the second off an assist from
Kolbe Curtin.Â
