Iona MLAX Ousts Hampton for First Program Victory

HAMPTON, VA - The Iona University men's lacrosse team took on Hampton on Sunday at noon from Armstrong Stadium, beating the hosts 13-8 for the Gaels first victory in program history. The Maroon & Gold attack flourished, firing off more than sixty shots with five players ending with at least two points.

AS IT HAPPENED

Cullen Lawry would set the tone early by scoring and putting the Gaels up 1-0 in the opening minute, grabbing an assist from Kyle Hardie. Lawry was involved in all four of Iona's opening goals, scoring the first three and delivering an assist to Kolbe Curtin on the fourth. Up a man late in the first stanza, Jimmy Kennedy snuck home his first career goal on a man-up opportunity, taking the Gael's out of the first quarter up a score of 5-2.

Jack Martinez became the next Gael to rifle a career-first goal and within seven minutes would take home his second, finishing a career-first assist from Max Monzo. Kolbe Curtin completed the Maroon & Gold's first half goal tally by finding the back of the net with his third goal of the season. With the contributions from Martinez and Curtin, the Gaels matched the three goals put up by the Pirates in the second quarter and headed into the locker room up 8-5.

Hampton struck first out of the break, not long before Vincent Pititto responded with his first career goal in Maroon & Gold. After another goal from the hosts to make it 9-7, the Gaels scored four unanswered to put the game out of reach. Jake Riglietti distributed the first two of the 4-0 run, with Jimmy Kennedy and Cullen Lawry sharing the spoils for two more goals a piece.

The Pirates responded with two late goals, but the offensive showing from the Gaels would be too much, as Iona completed their first win in program history, 13-9.
