Iona Baseball Fall Late Against Seton Hall, 5-4

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The Iona University Baseball fell 5-4 on Saturday night at Seton Hall. The Gaels offense could not get going, while the pitching was able to maintain the Pirates, it was not enough to secure the win. Junior Braize Mitchell and senior Matt Wessels led the Gaels in hits, but were not able to halt Seton Hall's pitching. The Gaels fell late in the eighth inning after leading, 4-2 for three innings.

Game Summary

The Gaels took charge in the second inning up 1-0 after a Wessels single scored graduate student Jayson Gonzalez. In the top of the fourth inning, Mitchell would knock in a double scoring freshman Sean Stephenson taking a 2-0 lead. Iona would score two more runs off of a Wessels double and junior Damian Rodriguez single.

Senior Andrelys Payamps keep the Pirates off the board until the bottom of the fourth when the Pirates would score on a two run single, bringing the score to 4-2. Seton Hall would take the lead off of senior Carl Kuentzel in the bottom of the eighth inning. Junior Joey Kasper would end the bleeding, but the Gaels would not ba ble to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth inning and take the loss.

Iona's Kasper would take the loss, his first of the year while Seton Hall's Downing would secure his fourth win of the season.
