SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The Iona University Baseball team finished their series win over Seton Hall with a win Sunday afternoon. Six strong innings from sophomore
Brendan Callanan allowed the Gaels to never lose the lead on the day. A strong first inning putting up four runs stood out as the offense struggled the rest of the way. Iona's starting pitching is really turning a corner as they are limiting walks and going deeper into games.
As for the offense, graduate student
James Kemp launched his fifth homer of the season in the first inning, a towering three run shot to left field. A quiet day for many other Gaels in the lineup, but the bullpen is what finished the Pirates off. Senior
Matt Zguro overpowered Seton Hall in his two innings to get his first save of the season.
Game Summary
The Gaels got their runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jc Frias worked a walk, before sophomore Jordan Overton reached on a fielding error. This set up Kemp to blast a homer deep into left field and take the early 3-0 lead. Junior Anthony Zollo would single and steal second, then advance to third on an error. Graduate student Jayson Gonzalez would slap a single to right field scoring Zollo and the Gaels would take a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
Callanan would run into trouble with two outs issuing a hit batter followed by a walk. The Pirates would get a run back on a single up the middle, but nothing else and they stranded two runners on base.
The next few innings would showcase the pitching dual with neither team finding any sort of offensive until the Gaels in the top of the fifth inning. Frias walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Yet another RBI situation for Kemp and he would capitalize, scoring Frias on a single to center field. Seton Hall would threaten in the bottom half of the fifth, getting two runners in scoring position with one out, but Callanan would get two shallow fly outs and escape the inning. The Pirates again would get two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Callanan would get out of it.
Sophomore Saul Mata would enter for Callanan come the seventh inning and instantly get himself into a jam hitting a batter and walking another. He would strikeout one, before the runners advanced on a double steal. Seton Hall would score on a sacrifice fly and bring in the next run on a single. That would end Mata's day and enter freshman Danny Onorato who only needed two pitches to end the inning.
The Gaels were sat down in order in the top of the eighth, before Zguro would enter the ballgame. After getting his first batter out, Zguro gave up a walk and a double before locking down the Pirates. Zguro would retire the next five Seton Hall batters he faced, three via strikeouts, and earned his first save of the year.
Callanan was awarded the win, while Seton Hall's Svenson took the loss. This was Callanan's second win of the season.
