NEW ROCHELLE, NY -Â The Iona University men's lacrosse team hosted Canisius on Saturday. In their final home matchup of the season, the Gaels landed 22 of 32 shots on goal as a team while Denny Piekutwoski counted a dozen saves. With both
scoring a hat-trick of goals, the Maroon & Gold took the visitors into overtime, but would ultimately drop the match by a score of 9-8.
THE Rundown
The visitors opened the scoring with two goals in the opening four minutes, before JAck Martinez assisted
Matthew Dyszkiewicz for the first Iona goal. One more goal from the Griffs would strike before
Jimmy Kennedy found his first goal of the afternoon, with the assist from
Vincent Pititto. The two sides existed the first stanza with Iona down by a score of 3-2. Â
The second quarter would be the lowest scoring of the game with both sides only netting one goal as
Jimmy Kennedy notched his second tally from a
Cullen Lawry Assist. Â
Out of the 10-minute halftime break the Griffs went on a 3-0 run to hand Iona their largest deficit of the game by a score of 7-3. A solo goal from
Jake Riglietti signaled the end of the visitors run and ended the third period with a score of 7-4 in favor of Canisius. Â
The Gaels rolled into the fourth quarter, going on a 4-0 run in the quarter started by
Jimmy Kennedy's third of the day on a man-up situation.
Matthew Dyszkiewicz joined the hat-trick club as he scored the next two and brought Iona level with Canisius with six minutes left on the clock.
Cullen Lawry completed the Gael comeback with two minutes remaining, putting the Maroon & Gold ahead with a rifled shot into the Canisius net. With less than a minute remaining, the visitors found an answer and forced overtime, as the two sides exited regulation locked at 8-8.Â
After a few tightly contested possessions in the extra period, Canisius scored the game-winner, as Iona dropped its final home contest of the season by a score of 9-8 in overtime. Â Â
IONA PERFORMERS
- Jimmy Kennedy and Matthew Dyszkiewicz both charged the Iona offense with three goals. Kennedy landed four of his five shots on target, while Dyszkiewicz landed seven of his eight shots on frame. Â
- Jack Martinez co-led all players on field with a pair of assists, taking one shot in the contest. Â
- Denny Piekutowski registered his eighth game in a row with double-digit saves, tallying 12 with a .571 save percentage. Â
- Cullen Lawry counted two points with a one goal, one assist outing. Â
- Kyle Hardie and Vincent Pititto both dished out assists. Â
- Tochi Agwamba caused two turnovers in the Iona defensive third, scooping up one ground ball. Â
THE OPPONENT
- Jaxson Fridge, Mason Wolford, and Jordan Reed all tallied three points in the game. Â
- Micah Hanson grabbed 10 ground balls and went 15-19 from the faceoff "X."Â
