Iona MLAX Drops Home Bout Against Merrimack

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's lacrosse team took on Merrimack in their penultimate home stand of the 2025 season on Saturday. Jack Martinez led the Gaels with a career-high two goals, while Alex Colavecchio notched his first point in Maroon & Gold, but the Gaels would drop the contest to Merrimack by a score of 19-6.

THE Rundown

The visitors opened the scoring in the third minute of play, but Iona responded with a Max Monzo tally with an assist from Jack Martinez. Through the second quarter, however, the Warriors scored  scored 10 unanswered. With two responses from Iona from Kolbe Curtin and Jack Martinez, and a handful of goals from Merrimack later, the two sides headed into halftime with Iona down a score of 15-3.

Merrimack were the only side to net a goal in the third quarter, going 2-2 in man-up opportunities in the stanza and 4-5 in the game. A three-goal Iona effort in the final quarter saw Jack Martinez, Matthew Dyszkiewicz, and Jimmy Kennedy find the net before the final buzzer, with the Gaels falling to the Warriors by a score of 19-6. 

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Jack Martinez recorded a career-high two goals and tallied one assist for a three-point outing. He also scooped up one ground ball. 
  • Cole Barnes counted a game-high six ground balls while going 8-19 from the faceoff X.
  • Kaiden Lewis co-led all players on field with three caused turnovers while picking up two ground balls.
  • Alex Colavecchio scored his first point in Maroon & Gold with an assist in the fourth quarter to Matthew Dyszkiewicz. 

THE OPPONENT

  • Colin Kruger led all players with seven points, tallying three goals and four assists. 
  • The Warriors fired off 51 shots with 32 landing on goal. 

Up Next

The Gaels host their final home game of the season on April 11 at 11:00 a.m. as they square off with Canisius.
