Iona Baseball Fall To St. Johns After Big Inning, 8-3

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Baseball team fell to St. John's 8-3. A seven run fifth inning put the Red Storm up 8-0 and while the Gaels offense started to wake up, it was too little too late. Sophomore Nicholas Mora led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a three hit game, while senior Anthony Febo had two hits and threw out a runner attempting to steal.

Freshman Justin Trinidad got the start for Iona and went four innings with two strikeouts. It took six Gael pitches to get through the next five innings and they struggled with seven walks.

Game Summary

The Gaels fell behind in the second inning 1-0 after back-to-back doubles. Afterwards, Trinidad proceeded to retire nine out of his next ten hitters. Iona's offense on the other hand was only able to muster two hits in the first four innings, a singles from junior Damian Rodriguez and Mora.

The top of the fifth inning saw junior Tyler Lender enter the game, but only face two batters before leaving with injury. Senior Ronald Rockey would enter and walk three batters and allow two hits before exiting for graduate student Joseph Bekios. Bekios would allow a walk and then a double before retiring three of the next four batters. In the bottom half of the fifth, Mora would lead off with a single, followed by senior Matt Wessels singling. They would both score on RBI ground outs from Rodriguez and graduate student Jayson Gonzalez.

Senior Brandon Pettrey would get the sixth inning and not allow a run. The Gaels would score again in the sixth after freshman Sean Stephenson led off with a single, junior Anthony Zollo reached on an error and Febo singled to load the bases. Wessels would draw a walk to bring the score to 8-3 where it would stay the rest of the way. Senior Robert Lasbury would work two innings and sophomore Bruce Wadiak would close out the eighth inning.

Trinidad was handed the loss, his second of the season and St. John's Dylan Johnson earned his first win of the year.
