Iona Baseball Fall To Wagner At Home, 9-2

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University Baseball team fell to Wagner 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon. After going up 2-0 early, the Gaels could not contain nor respond to Wagner, who would score nine unanswered runs. Seven Wagner pitchers combined to go the nine innings, with six not allowing any runs and three allowing no hits. On the Gaels side, freshman Danny Onorato got the start, but gave up six runs in three innings of work.

Game Summary

The Gaels took an early lead in the top of the first inning with a lead off single from junior Damian Rodriguez, but he would get thrown out stealing. Next batter, sophomore Jc Frias would launch a home run to left center field for an early 1-0 lead. Graduate student James Kemp would get hit by a pitch then steal second before scoring on an RBI single from graduate student Jayson Gonzalez. That was about it for the Gaels offense.

In the top of the second, Wagner would load the bases with no outs on a hit by pitch, walk, and single. Two runs would score on a double, followed by an RBI ground out, before the final run of the inning would score on an infield single. The third inning, Wagner would get back-to-back walks before punishing the Gaels with a two run triple putting the lead to 6-2. In the top of the fourth, sophomore Saul Mata would enter the game. Wagner would get two more singles and a walk to push their lead to 7-2. Mata's day would end with three strikeouts in two innings. Junior Jackson Kossow would then be called upon for the sixth inning, he would allow one run on two singles and a walk. He would return for the seventh, where Wagner would lead off with a double and two walks to load the bases. They would score their final run and go up 9-2. Kossow would exit with three strikeouts as well and sophomore Kyle Hard would go the last two innings and not allow a run.
