NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team hosted Loyola Maryland at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon in its second home contest of the season at Mazzella Field. Just after restarting play in the second half, a lengthy weather delay ultimately resulted in a suspended game due to lightning in the area.
A date to resume the contest will be attempted to be found by the two teams and announced at a later time.
GAME SUMMARY
The Greyhounds looked to strike first with a breakaway attempt in the fifth minute, but rookie goalkeeper
Josh Bells was there to make the save collegiate save. Momentum shifted in Iona's favor as Loyola was booked for a second yellow and red card in the 24
th minute.
The Gaels got finally broke through in the 33rd minute as sophomore
Emilio Rossi threaded a pass through the Greyhounds defense to classmate
Alvaro Maneiro who took one dribble and threaded the ball to the back left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Iona fired two more shots to close out the opening stanza. The second half then got under way, reaching 54:15 with the Gaels on a free kick chance inside the Loyola end before ultimately stopping to lightning in the area.
Should a resumption date be found, the game will resume with 35:31 left in the contest since it did not reach the 70-minute mark required to be an officially completed game.
