Iona MSOC Opens Metro Spring College Cup Against Seton Hall

NEW ROCHELLE, NY— A tightly contested battle between the Iona University men's soccer team and the Seton Hall ended scoreless after regulation and overtime on Friday afternoon to begin the new Metro Spring College Cup exhibition slate. The Pirates edged out the Gaels 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Mazzella Field.

GAME SUMMARY

Both teams began the match with good tempo and intent, sharing possession through the opening half as each side tried to establish rhythm in midfield. Seton Hall created the first meaningful chances of the game, using quick transitions to threaten the Iona back line, while the Gaels responded with patient build-up play and dangerous service into the penalty area.

The momentum of the match shifted midway through the second half when Seton Hall was reduced to ten men following a sending off. With the numerical advantage, Iona gradually took control of possession and pushed forward in search of a breakthrough. The Gaels circulated the ball well and created several promising attacking moments, but the Pirates defended resolutely and their goalkeeper came up with key saves to keep the match level.

Despite Iona's territorial advantage late in the game and through the overtime periods, neither side was able to find the decisive goal. Seton Hall remained disciplined defensively, while Iona continued to probe but could not convert their pressure into a goal.

The contest was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. Both teams converted their first four attempts, but Seton Hall held their nerve in the decisive round to secure a 5–4 shootout victory.

While Iona will feel unfortunate not to capitalize on their advantage after the red card, the Gaels produced a strong performance with extended spells of possession. Seton Hall, meanwhile, showed resilience and composure under pressure to grind out the result and claim the win in penalties.
