Iona Men Lead MAAC Swim & Dive After Day 1; Women in Sixth

GENEVA, OH - The 2026 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships got off to a big start Wednesday night for the Iona Gaels swimmers and divers. Full results are available at https://swimmeetresults.tech/MAAC-2026/

The Iona men's quartet of Kieran Egan, Max Buchen, Wyatt Julian, and Nick Patino combined to take the gold medal in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:26.89, with four career-best efforts. Egan, a junior, led off the backstroke leg in 21.89. Buchen, a sophomore, went 24.26 in the 50 breaststroke and handed off to freshman Wyatt Julian, who, behind the strength of superb underwater dolphin kicking, posted a 21.40 split. Junior Nick Patino closed out the wire-to-wire win with a 19.34 leg  the fastest in school history to defeat Rider University by .59 seconds.

The Iona men's 800-yard Freestyle Relay held the lead through the first half, with junior Harry Platt posting a 1:38.65 lead-off leg and handing off to classmate Elijah Decasseres, who recorded his first career sub-1:40 effort at 1:38.96. Junior Nate Wales followed with a 1:38.45. Junior Noah Giunta anchored with a career-best 1:39.53. Marist and Fairfield closed, going stroke for stroke, with Fairfield taking gold at 6:30.60, Marist earning silver at 6:33.55, and Iona taking bronze at 6:35.59.

The gold and bronze relay finishes helped Iona to a two-point lead in the team race with 118 points over Fairfield. Rider (106) and Marist (104) round out the top four.

The Iona women ended the night in sixth place, helped by a new school championship record by junior Emma Todd, who tallied 208.00 points for 10th place in the women's 1-meter springboard.

The 200-yard Medley Relay saw the quartet of sophomore backstroker Raegan O'Brien (25.98), freshman breaststroker Francesca Fields (29.34), freshman butterflyer Victoria Mordaunt (25.02), and sophomore freestyler Mary Grace Waring (23.78) take fifth in 1:44.12, just 2.2 seconds off a medal.

The 800-yard Freestyle Relay team of Marissa Hengesbach (1:56.37), Kate Kennedy (1:56.55), Anabel Huffstutler (1:54.22), and O'Brien (1:53.63) placed seventh in 7:40.77.
The Iona women stand in sixth place with 111 points. Marist (207), Sacred Heart (204), Rider (149), Fairfield (141), and Niagara (120) hold the top five spots.

Coach Nick Cavataro commented, "We had great efforts today, but our group has big goals, and I think our best swimming is ahead of us over the next three days."
