WWP Falls On The Road To Princeton

Box Score PRINCETON, NJ  - Managing only single goals in the first and third quarters, the Iona women's water polo team fell 14-2 to 13th-ranked (tie) Princeton University in a non-conference match this afternoon. Senior captain Lola Trujillo and sophomore Bailey Desmond led the Maroon and Gold (3-7 overall) with one goal each.

The Gaels scored two goals on 17 shots, with an assist by sophomore Olivia Weissman.

In goal, freshman MJ Metzdorf had nine saves on 25 Princeton shots and allowed 14 goals.

On defense, the Gaels made 10 steals, with five by Trujillo. Iona drew six Princeton kickouts, with two each by sophomores Grace Goldhammer and Nicole Morrison, while being ejected six times. Trujillo won three of four swim-offs.

Iona scored one goal on six woman-up chances, while Princeton scored three of six chances. The Gaels turned the ball over 14 times.

With 44 seconds gone in the match, Princeton struck first, but Trujillo answered on a woman-up chance to tie the game at one with 6:36 left in the opening period. The Tigers tacked on two straight scores to go up 3-1 with 2:26 remaining. Another unanswered Princeton goal gave the hosts a 4-1 margin going into the second period.

Continuing a 4-0 run, the Tigers built a four-goal edge, 5-1, with 4:08 left in the second quarter. Two minutes later, the home squad scored again for a 6-1 halftime advantage, as Iona managed only one goal on 12 first-half shots.

Two more Princeton goals on a 7-0 run resulted in an 8-1 home cushion with 4:24 remaining in the third period. Desmond's lob 1:03 later cut the Princeton lead to 8-2. The Tigers answered with 45 seconds left for a 9-2 margin going into the final period.

Just 1:35 into the final period, a woman-up score upped the home edge to 10-2. On a 4-0 run, the Tigers went up 12-2 with 3:21 remaining in regulation. Two more Princeton goals in the closing 2:22, including a 6-on-5 score, sealed the 14-2 home win.

On Wednesday, the Gaels take on Wagner College in a non-conference match at 6:30 p.m. ET.
