STONY BROOK, NY – The Iona University men's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Stony Brook University in non-conference action at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves scored three unanswered goals in the second half and kept Iona off the scoreboard over the final 30 minutes to secure the win. Sophomore
Jake Riglietti paced the offense with a hat trick in the setback.
THE RUNDOWN
Stony Brook struck first less than five minutes into the contest, and the teams traded goals over the next 20 minutes. The Seawolves carried a 2-1 lead into the second quarter after Riglietti evened the score at 1-1 on a feed from freshman
Carson Turissini at the 9:28 mark of the first.
Sophomore
Kyle Hardie opened the second quarter scoring with his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. After the home side reclaimed a 3-2 edge, Riglietti scored twice in a span of just over a minute to give the visitors their first lead of the afternoon. Following a Stony Brook equalizer, sophomores
Jimmy Kennedy and
Cullen Lawry scored 40 seconds apart to put Iona in front 6-4. The Seawolves answered immediately off the ensuing faceoff to cut the deficit to 6-5 at halftime.
Defense dominated the second half. Stony Brook netted the lone goal of the third quarter to draw even at 6-6, then scored less than 20 seconds into the fourth and added an insurance marker with 11:40 remaining to complete the comeback.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Riglietti recorded his first three goals of the season in his second appearance of the year after making his debut in the last game against LIU.
- Turissini dished out two assists, extending his multiple-point streak to three games.
- Kennedy finished with a goal and an assist for his second straight multi-point effort.
- Lawry scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, while Hardie also found the back of the net and freshman Luke Neary added an assist.
- Sophomore goalie Noah Perea turned in a career-best 21 saves to anchor the defensive effort.
- Sophomore Cooper Metz collected six ground balls and caused three turnovers to lead the field players.
THE OPPONENT
- Justin Bonacci and Collin Williamson each scored twice, with Bonacci adding an assist for a three-point afternoon.
- Williamson also picked up six ground balls to pace the Seawolves.
- Caleb Yeung contributed two assists in the win.
- Goaltender Tommy Wilk made 12 saves to secure the victory.
TEAM STATS
- Stony Brook held advantages in shots 47-28, ground balls 37-25 and faceoffs 12-5.
- Both teams committed 19 turnovers in an evenly played contest.
UP NEXT
Iona travels to Salt Lake City this weekend to take on the University of Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday Feb. 28. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The Utes are receiving votes in this week's men's lacrosse coaches' poll.
