BRONX, NY — The Iona University Baseball team faced off against the Fordham Rams in a midweek matchup and fell in a tough loss, 14-2.
Game summary
The Rams opened the game by scoring one run following an error to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams were quiet in the second inning, but the Rams broke through in the third with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. In the next at-bat, Fordham drew a walk and followed it with a double to push the lead to 4-0. Two batters later, an RBI single allowed the Rams to add another run and make the score 5-0.
Redshirt junior Jordan Overton led off the fourth inning with a home run to cut into the Rams' lead. Fordham answered in the bottom of the inning with two consecutive RBI singles to extend the advantage to 7-1. The Gaels' offense remained quiet while the Rams continued to capitalize, hitting a grand slam in the fifth inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
The Gaels threatened in the sixth with two runners on base and two outs, but left them stranded after an inning-ending strikeout. The Rams added another run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to extend their lead to 12-1. The offense continued in the seventh as the Rams hit two home runs in the inning to build a 14-1 lead.
The Maroon and Gold put together a small rally in the eighth, adding one run after freshman Aiden Ciprian put the ball in play to score a run and make the score 14-2. The Gaels' offense remained quiet in the ninth as they fell to the Rams 14-2 in their midweek matchup.
