Iona Baseball Falls 7-4 vs. Merrimack in Saturday Afternoon Matchup

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team faced off against Merrimack in game two of a three game set. The Maroon and Gold struck first with a run in the opening inning, but a three run fifth inning from Merrimack put the Gaels behind by two. Iona responded in the sixth with two runs of their own to tie the game, but a four run eighth inning from the Warriors proved to be the difference as the Gaels fell 7-4.

Game summary

After senior Damian Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, he stole two bases and was later driven in on a groundout by junior AJ Oden to give the Gaels an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Brendan Callanan started the day strong with four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.

Callanan ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. The second batter of the inning doubled down the line, and the next hitter singled to center to put runners on the corners with one out. The runner on third stole home, and the following two batters doubled to left field to give Merrimack a 3-1 lead.

The Gaels rallied in the sixth as an RBI single from Rodriguez brought them within one. A single from redshirt sophomore Sean Stephenson advanced Rodriguez to second and freshman Aiden Ciprian to third after Ciprian had walked earlier in the inning. Oden then flew out to center, allowing Ciprian to score and tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Maroon and Gold led off the inning with a walk from redshirt freshman Cole Silvia. He was later driven in on a groundout by senior Nickolas Mora to give the Gaels a one run advantage heading into the eighth inning.

The Warriors opened the eighth with a single, followed by a hit by pitch. Merrimack tied the game at four with a ground rule double. With runners on second and third, a triple down the line brought both runners home to make it 6-4. After a walk, the runner on third scored on a groundout to extend the lead to 7-4. The eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Gaels fell 7-4.
