Iona MLAX Pulls Away Late to Defeat Manhattan, 16-12, at Mazzella Field

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's lacrosse team held off Manhattan for a 16-12 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Mazzella Field. The win marked the first of the season for the Gaels and the first home triumph in the one-plus seasons of the program's existence. Nursing a one-goal lead with four minutes remaining, the Maroon & Gold scored three times in the final 2:50 to seal the victory.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona trailed only once in the contest, and for just 43 seconds after Manhattan scored the game's opening goal at the 10:19 mark of the first quarter. Rookie Carson Turissini produced the first of four ties at 9:36, netting the first of his two goals on the afternoon. After the teams traded tallies to make it 2-2, the Gaels struck twice late in the period. Freshman Franco Caputo and sophomores Cooper Metz and Cullen Lawry fueled the closing push as the home side carried a 4-2 advantage into the second quarter.

Both teams exchanged goals to begin the second frame before sophomore Kolbe Curtin answered a Jasper score at 10:10 to restore a two-goal cushion. Rookie Lleyton Hall did the same nearly seven minutes later, scoring his first of three goals to give Iona a 6-4 lead with under three minutes left in the half. Manhattan responded with a pair of goals, including one in the final minute, to send the game into halftime even at 6-6.

The third quarter produced the most offense of the day with nine combined goals. Turissini and Lawry opened the scoring in the period as the teams again traded strikes. When the flurry ended, the Gaels held a narrow 11-10 edge entering the fourth. Manhattan tied the game for the fourth and final time with 5:29 to play. Less than a minute later, Kyle Hardie delivered the go-ahead goal with 4:41 remaining to put the Maroon & Gold back in front. Hall and Caputo followed to extend the run and build a three-goal margin before the visitors scored twice in the final 71 seconds of the quarter to pull within one.

Iona answered early in the fourth as freshman Luke Neary and sophomore Jimmy Kennedy found the net to stretch the advantage to 13-10 with 12:31 to play. After more than seven minutes without a goal from either side, Manhattan broke through with back-to-back tallies to trim the deficit to 13-12 with under five minutes remaining. Hall, Neary and Hardie then closed the door. The trio scored three goals in a 1:47 span to cap the scoring and secure the Gaels' first win of the season.
