LEWISTON, NY —The Iona University baseball team defeated the Purple Eagles 9-3. After falling down 3-0 in the third inning, the Gaels would use a trio of three-runs home runs to propel them to a game two win.
GAME SUMMARY
The Purple Eagles struck first in the bottom of the first. Niagara opened the game with a single through the left side, and two batters later they homered to left center to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Gaels threatened in the top of the third as redshirt freshman
Cole Silvia led off the inning with a single. Senior
Braize Mitchell followed with a single to put two runners on. The next two batters were retired, and a pick off ended the inning and got the Purple Eagles out of the jam.
Niagara added another run after a walk and a stolen base put a runner on second with one out. A single in the next at bat drove in the runner to extend the lead to 3-0. With Niagara's pitching holding strong early, Iona responded in the fifth.
Mitchell led off with a ground rule double, followed by a single from freshman
Aiden Ciprian. Senior
Damian Rodriguez stepped up and homered to left field to tie the game at three. Junior
Brendan Callanan settled in after the first three innings and finished with five innings pitched, allowing three runs while striking out two.
The game turned in the top of the seventh when the Maroon and Gold took control. Redshirt junior
Jordan Overton and Silvia each hit three run home runs, fueling a six run inning and shifting all momentum to the Gaels. Senior
Sean Davis shut the door from there, and the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Iona defeated the Purple Eagles 9-3.
