Iona Baseball Drops Series Finale Against Niagara, 3-2

LEWISTON, NY — The Iona University baseball team fell in the series finale against the Purple Eagles, 3-2. Niagara broke through with a three-run third inning. The Gaels responded in the fourth to cut the deficit to one, but were unable to push across another run the rest of the way.

GAME SUMMARY

Freshman Luke Lang made his first career start on Sunday. He allowed a lead off single but responded by getting the next batter to ground into a double play. The following batter lined out to end the inning. Iona threatened in the top of the second as junior AJ Oden singled down the line with one out, and Anthony Zollo followed with a single of his own. A ground out, however, ended the inning.

Niagara began a rally in the bottom of the third. A single to right field opened the frame, followed by a double down the left field line to bring in the game's first run. After a ground out, a single to center field plated another run to give the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead. That RBI single was followed by another base hit to put runners on first and second with two outs. A subsequent single extended Niagara's lead to 3-0.

Sophomore Malachi Costello led off the top of the fourth with a walk, and redshirt-junior Jordan Overton homered to bring the Gaels within one. Offense was limited in the fifth and sixth innings, as the teams combined for just four hits.

In the top of the seventh, the Maroon and Gold looked to complete the comeback. Zollo was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and redshirt-freshman Cole Silvia singled through the left side to put runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but the next two batters struck out, leaving them stranded.

The Gaels threatened again in the top of the eighth. A fielding error by the Purple Eagles and a single from Oden put runners on the corners with two outs. The next batter flew out, ending the threat. Iona went down in order in the ninth as the Purple Eagles secured the series win, 3-2.
