EMMITSBURG, MD — The Iona University baseball team fell to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers 9-2 in the third game of the three-game series. After a quiet start from the Maroon and Gold offense, highlighted by a home run from junior
AJ Oden, a big fifth inning from the Mount allowed the Mountaineers to pull away.
Game Summary
The first run of the game came on a late Mountaineers home run after the first two batters were retired. The Maroon and Gold answered in the top of the second when Oden hit a home run to tie the score at 1-1. A hit and a walk started a rally for the Mountaineers, and an error allowed the Mount to regain the lead at 2-1.
The Gaels threatened in the top of the third after opening the inning with a hit and a hit-by-pitch, but they were unable to convert as the next three batters were retired. In the bottom of the frame, the Mount extended its lead with a lead off home run. The Gaels looked to shift the momentum after recording two consecutive hits with two outs, but a line out ended the inning and kept the Mountaineers' lead at two.
The Mount offense continued to produce in the bottom of the fifth. Two consecutive hits to begin the inning were followed by a three-run home run to right field, giving the Mountaineers their largest lead of the day at 6-1. The Gaels cut into the lead in the sixth when a lead off hit from sophomore Malachi Costello allowed senior Nickolas Mora to drive him in later in the inning with a single, making the score 6-2. The Mountaineers responded immediately, as a bases-loaded walk pushed the score to 7-2.
The Maroon and Gold threatened again with a two-out rally in the seventh, but a strikeout looking ended the inning. The Mount began the bottom of the frame with a hit and a walk and later drove in a run on an RBI single to make the score 8-2. The Gaels offense remained quiet the rest of the afternoon, and the Mount added another run in the eighth as the Gaels fell 9-2 in the afternoon match up.
