NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team defeated Sacred Heart 6-3 in the second game of the three game set. The scoring started quickly as the Gaels took a 1-0 lead on a first inning home run. The score remained tight at 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, until the Maroon and Gold added three runs in the inning to take control of the game. The Iona bullpen was dominant, pitching 4.2 innings of hitless baseball to secure the win for the Gaels.
GAME SUMMARY
The scoring started immediately for the Maroon and Gold as redshirt sophomore Sean Stephenson homered to center field to give the Gaels an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Brendan Callanan was dominant in the first two innings, not allowing a single hit.
Sacred Heart tied the game at one in the top of the third with an RBI single to right center. In the bottom of the third, senior Nickolas Mora singled to right center, followed by a walk from senior Damian Rodriguez. The bases were loaded after sophomore Malachi Costello reached on an error.
Junior AJ Oden stepped up and delivered a single through the left side, scoring Rodriguez and Mora to give the Gaels a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fourth, Sacred Heart cut the lead in half with a single to right center that made it 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Zollo led off with a single, redshirt freshman Cole Silvia walked on four pitches, and Mora singled to load the bases for Rodriguez. A sacrifice fly brought in one run, and a pair of fielding mishaps by the Pioneers allowed the play to clear the bases, giving the Gaels a four-run advantage.
In the top of the fifth, a double and a sacrifice bunt moved a runner to third, who was later driven in by an RBI double to make it 6-3. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded as Callanan exited the game and junior Kyle Hard entered. Hard induced a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Both offenses were quiet in the sixth and seventh innings. Sophomore Justin Trinidad was key, pitching quick 1-2-3 innings in both frames. After two consecutive hit by pitches in the top of the eighth, Trinidad responded with a pop out and a line out to stop the rally.
In the top of the ninth, graduate student Tyler Lender entered and retired all three batters on ground outs to secure the Gaels' 6-3 win and the series.
