EDISON, NJ— Rookie Rachael Morales of the Iona University softball team was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

It is the second MAAC Rookie of the Week honor for the Maroon & Gold this season after Melissa Gordon garnered the weekly honors back on March 17.

Morales led the Gaels with a .462 (6-for-13) batting average this past week. She recorded a team-high four runs scored, two home runs and five runs batted in during the 2-2 week for the Gaels. The Tolland, CT native opened the week with a career day in the 5-2 win over LIU on Wednesday. Morales posted a leadoff home run, a two-run home run and a two-RBI single in the victory over the Sharks. She followed that up with a single and run scored in the 8-3 game one win over Marist on Saturday. Morales added a hit in each of the one run setbacks in game two Friday and the series finale on Saturday against the Red Foxes.

Iona is amid a MAAC doubleheader against Canisius this afternoon and then hits the road to Niagara for a weekend series starting Saturday, April 11.
