Iona MSOC Battles Rider to 2-2 Draw

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona University men's soccer battled Rider to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Freshman Ignacio Manzanares scored both goals for the Maroon & Gold for his second brace of the season.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona controlled the offensive chances throughout the opening half and broke through in the 10th minute. Freshman Brayden O'Boyle set up Manzanares for his third goal of the season, giving the Gaels an early 1-0 advantage. 

Senior Francesco Borla nearly doubled the lead in the 15th minute, but his attempt struck the left post. Iona outshot Rider 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes and carried the one-goal advantage into halftime. 

Rider responded quickly after the break, scoring twice in five minutes to take a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute. 

Iona found the equalizer in the 74th minute when Manzanares scored his second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season. Sophomore Ricardo Vivo Calderon and sophomore Andres Becerra were credited with assists on the goal. 

The Gaels continued to push for the winner late, forcing multiple saves over the closing minutes, but were unable to break the 2-2 deadlock. 

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Manzanares recorded his first brace of the season, scoring twice and putting all three of his shots on goal. 
  • Vivo Calderon registered an assist and a team-high five shots. 
  • O'Boyle and Becerra each tallied their first collegiate assist. 
  • Freshman goalkeeper Adriano Sofio made three saves. 

THE OPPONENT

  • Michael Holliday and Emmanuel Dan-Adokiene scored Rider's two goals. 
  • Dan-Adokiene added an assist to finish with three points. 
  • Goalkeeper Marius Helias made seven saves. 

TEAM STATS

  • Iona held a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. 
  • The Gaels earned 11 corner kicks compared to four for Rider. 

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Manzanares' two goals raised his season total to four. 
  • Iona's 28 shots marked its highest offensive output of the match while holding Rider to 11 attempts.
