George Schaefer enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Iona College baseball program under head coach Pat Carey. Schaefer is responsible for the pitching staff while also aiding in the development of the Iona outfielders and catchers.
Schaefer comes to New Rochelle after spending one season at Lehigh University where he served as Director of Baseball Operations (2013-2014). During his time at Lehigh, Schaefer assisted with team travel, scheduling, on campus recruiting and the day to day operations of the program. He was a member of a coaching staff that led the Mountain Hawks to a 25-24 record and a runner up finish in the Patriot League Championship.
During the summer of 2014 Schaefer served as Head Coach of the Geneva Red Wings in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL), leading the Red Wings to a 32-19 record and an Eastern Division Regular Season Championship.
Schaefer played collegiately at Charleston Southern University from 2009-2013. A four-year pitcher for the Buccaneers, he was named co-captain his senior year. While at CSU, Schaefer served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). A four-time member of the Big South Academic Honor Roll, Schaefer graduated with a double major in Political Science and Communications.
In December 2014, Schaefer completed a Master's degree in Politics and Policy from Lehigh University. Additionally, he will serve as Head Coach of the New Market Rebels in the Valley Baseball League during the 2015 summer. Schaefer is originally from Norfolk, VA..
