Glen Island, NY - The Iona College men's rowing team rowed in the Fall Metropolitan Regatta on their home course today.
The men's varsity eight of Alex Niedzwiecki, Steve Pascuzzi, Ian Mangiardi, Kerry Moss, John Yearwood, Tim Malet, George Vrettos, and Nick Smilios coxed by Steve Grimaldi opened the day's racing with a 19 second loss to Fordham. On a course with perfect conditions and fast water due to the incoming tide, this defeat is pretty comparable to last year's performance. While the Iona squad has been battling injury and illness leading up to today's race, Fordham's victories are still proving too comfortable.
The varsity eight broke down to a varsity four and a junior varsity four for each rower's second race of the day.
The men's j.v. four of Yearwood, Malet, Vrettos and Pascuzzi coxed by Grimaldi placed second of three, trailing Fordham by a long 25 second gap but still dominating Manhattan who were another 13 seconds in arrears.
The men's varsity four of Niedzwiecki, Moss, Mangiardi and Smilios coxed by Grimaldi placed second of four, comfortably beating Hofstra and Stony Brook, but again trailing Fordham by a considerable 15 second margin.
The men's novice four of Matt Sallusto, Alex Wickers, Richard Connor and Rashad Clay coxed by Max Gaston and coached by Jamie Hafer placed third of five ahead of Fordham and Sarah Lawrence by a large margin, but behind NYU and Manhattan by quite some margin too.
The men's freshman eight of Sallusto, Wickers, Connor, Clay, and Kelvin Collado, with freshmen recruits Mangiardi and Smilios going out for their third race of the day with Gaston coxing placed third of five. This lineup proved the surprise of the day. While Fordham dominated the race, Iona finished relatively close to Hofstra while keeping clear of Manhattan and Stony Brook. The surprise was based on the fact that this lineup had never rowed together in an eight before.
