Norfolk, VA- The Iona College baseball team dropped the first of a four-game series with Old Dominion this afternoon at Bud Metheny Complex. After leading 1-0 after four innings, the Monarchs (8-6) exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to seal the game.
Trailing 11-0, the Gaels (2-4) plated four runs in the top of the eighth inning. A pinch hit single by sophomore Keith Kenny got the ball rolling for the Maroon & Gold. An error by ODU 2B Cameron Scott on his first chance of the game put runners on first and third with no outs. Rookie DH Andrew Passerelle singled home Kenny and sent freshman 2B Mike Walraven to second. Two batters later, freshman C Andrew Wernicki laced and one-out RBI single to right for Iona's second run. Wernicki and Passerelle came around on Senior CF Kevin McGovern's two-run double to round out the scoring players for Iona.
Junior RHP Bobby DiNuzzo (0-2) tossed five innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Junior RHP Shane Sveda allowed the other six (only two were earned) in the final three innings of work.
The Gaels return to action for a doubleheader in Norfolk at noon.
