Stony Brook, NY - The Iona College softball team took on Stony Brook
today and split with the host for the doubleheader. With an 8-0 shut
out by the Seawolves in the first game, the Gaels powered back
defeating Stony Brook 6-4 in game two.
The Gaels didn't seem enough for the Seawolves in the first match up being shut out by the team 8-0. Rookie SS Courtnie Christie contributed the Gaels only hit of the game with a single to right field in the second inning.

Game two was a complete turn around for the Maroon and Gold who defeated Stony Brook 6-4. Senior 3B Lexi Garbowski
(3-for3, 3 runs, 3 RBI) sparked the Gaels ten hit game with s complete
slugging fest starting with a solo shot to left field in the third
inning giving the team a 1-0 advantage over the Seawolves. In the top
of the fourth inning Christie singled to left field, followed by
sophomore 1B Val Laschen's (1-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) two run
homerun over the center field fence, giving the Gaels a 3-0 lead. The
next blow would come again from Garbowski who blasted one over the left
fielder's head making the score 4-0. Stony Brook's 1B Samantha Posey
would retaliate with a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the
sixth inning putting the first run on the board for the Seawolves.
With the score now 4-1 Garbowski was far from finished taking another
pitch over the left center fence making the score 5-1 for the Gaels.
Freshman 2B Katilin Calogera (2-for-4) then stepped up to the plate and lined a single to center field followed by a single from junior C Laura Stott
(1-for-4. With Christie at bat and Moyer, who reached on a fielder's
choice, advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a wild
pitch, Christie struck out to end the inning. Stony Brook did not give
up scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, first on a
double by CF Kelsi Finelli and two run homerun by C Marissa Fluery.
These two runs would not make a difference as the Gaels held on to
defeat the Seawolves 6-4.
The win for the Gaels goes to junior RHP Becky Riccitelli
who pitched a complete game and commanded ten strike outs, allowed only
ten hits and four runs to score. The win brings Riccitelli's record to
(5-7).
