SOFTBALL SCHEDULE CHANGED FOR THIS WEEKEND

GAELS PICK UP DOUBHLEHEADER SWEEP AT SIENA

Loudonville NY - The Iona College softball team took two conference wins sweeping host Siena in today's doubleheader. The Maroon and Gold shut out the Saints in game one 10-0 and hung on to win game to 6-5.

Junior RHP Becky Riccitelli pitched a shut out in game one of the doubleheader. The Gaels hurler gave up six hits without a run scoring and commanded six strike outs. The win brings Riccitelli's record to (6-7).

The Gaels made the first blow in the first inning of game one with a single by sophomore C Laura Stott, which scored senior CF Alex Sprague(1-for-1, 2 runs). Stott went 2-for-3 in the game with 2 RBI and scoring 2 runs for the Maroon and Gold. Iona continued the hurt throughout the game adding on nine more unanswered runs and eleven hits. Freshman SS Courtney Christie went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Game two for the Gaels was a little different but they hung on for the win defeating the Saints 6-5. Iona again out the first run up on the board in the top of the second inning with a homerun hit to center field by junior 1B Val Laschen(2-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 run). Siena answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to center field hit by the Saints SS Kelly Boyle tied the game at 1.

The Gaels then took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning with a single by senior DP Laura Bosso(1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run) scoring Christie(1-for-4 1run). Next came a two run homerun to left center by sophomore RF Angie Ortiz(2-for-4, 2RBI, 1 run) putting the Gaels up 4-1. A Lashen single in the fifth gave the Gaels another run and a bigger lead.

With the Maroon and Gold up 5-1 the Saints fought back and tied the game scoring two runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Going into the eighth inning with the score tied at five and one out against them, senior 3B Lexi Garbowski hit a solo shot over the right center fence giving the Gaels the run and the lead they would hang onto for the win.

The win goes to junior RHP Amanda Glaser who in four innings struck out three and allowed one earned run to score. The win for Glaser brings her record to (2-4).

 

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 24) at Sacred Heart University at 3:00 pm.
