Fall 2007
Greetings from the Hynes Athletics Center!
As the summer winds down the fall semester has come to full swing and our campus once again is filled with students. Our coaches, student-athletes, and administrators are beginning to feel the anticipation and excitement associated with another year of Iona College Athletics.
The
2006-2007 Annual Report is currently available on our redesigned website at
www.ICgaels.com. This report allows members of the Iona Community and Gael supporters the opportunity to relive the triumphs and highlights from the past year in Iona Athletics. It provides us the ability to communicate our gratitude to the many individuals whose countless contributions make it possible for the continued success of Gaels Athletics. Take a moment to review the year that was 2006-07.
Coming this fall, there is great buzz and excitement as our 16-time defending MAAC champion, two-time defending Northeast Regional champion and third-place finisher at the 2006 NCAA Championship
men's cross country program returns to the trails. We look forward to this success continuing throughout this year's campaign on the way to another tremendous showing at the NCAA Championship. The up-and-coming
women's program also looks for their third straight MAAC title and a berth into the NCAAs. Last year, the women finished 20th at the national championship in their first ever appearance as a team.
ICGaels.com has provided us with an opportunity to provide a state-of-the-art internet experience which has come to fruition this fall. On September 1, Iona's football game vs. Delaware Valley featured our first ever
live video web cast. We look forward to bringing you many athletic events this school year. We are most proud that our own student body is responsible for the production aspect including from camera operators to on-air talent. If you are an Iona student interested in getting involved with TV and radio production, send an e-mail to Assistant AD/Athletic Communications
Brian Beyrer (
bbeyrer@iona.edu). In addition to the web streaming,
live stats for the majority of our on campus athletic contests are also now available. As a fan of Iona Athletics, you can get up-to-the-minute updates on home events. All of the multimedia content can be found using the menu on the top of every page of the website. Also for the first time, we are offering the ability to purchase official athletic gear through the
Gael Shop as well as the ability to purchase event photos at our online
Photo Store.
We are also proud of the facilities upgrades that took place during the summer. With the ever-changing landscape of college athletics, facilities need to be kept up to standards so student-athletes and supporters feel confident from preparation to participation to celebration. Several renovations have recently taken place including the enhancement of the varsity weight room, representation of all our athletic teams in the redesigned Hynes East lobby and a face lift for the main court in the Hynes Center where our men's and women's basketball team as well as our volleyball showcase their skills.
The fall athletics calendar is one filled with many exciting match-ups as well as great events. This year's
homecoming weekend will feature your Gael football team taking on MAAC rivals Duquesne. The activity filled weekend also includes the 2007 MAAC Cross Country Championship,
Meet the Gaels with our Men's and Women's basketball teams and the
Sixth Annual Clam Slam.
I look forward to you joining me in supporting our Gaels this fall.
Go Gaels!
