New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College Women's Swimming and Diving team drew a split in the
its tri-meet on Tuesday night. The Gaels get the Terriers at bay,
82-23, but fell to the Seawolves 71.5 to 41.5. Amanda Cody set the
pace for the Maroon & Gold touching the wall first in the 50 and
100 Freestyle races.
Iona started quickly with a first place finish in the 200 Medley relay. The team of Maggie Wood, Jamie Manser, Sam Cody and Amanda Cody touched the wall first with a time of 1:52.59. Mackenzie Mone followed a few events later in the 200 Free and took the victory by .01 margin with a time of 1:58.53. Amanda Cody was the story for the Maroon & Gold as she took the top spot with strong final laps. She took the 50 Free in 24.96 and followed it up with a 54.61 in the 100 Free. "[Amanda] wants to go out with a bang," said Head Coach Nick Cavataro. "Our sprint guys have really been solid all year."
Other strong performers for the Gaels in the pool were Maggie Wood, who finished in second in the 100 Back with a time of 1:02.65. Christine Larkin performed well in the distance races posting a time of 5:21.75 in the 500 Free and touching the wall in 10:49.42 in the 1000 Free. Sam Cody touched the wall just behind the leader in the 100 Fly at 1:01.14 and Manser placed second in the 100 Back at 1:10.69.
The Gaels are back in action this weekend as they open MAAC Conference
competition on the road against Canisius. Though this is only the third
meet of the season for Cavataro's group, he feels that they're ready to
compete. "We're going to quickly look to Saturday's meet against
Canisius. Our kids all know our seasonal plan. We're still in the phase
of conditioning and when you're stronger, it is a different feel when
you're in the pool."
