Kissimmee, FL - After a tough start to the 2008 Rebel Spring Games, the Iona College
softball grabbed their first win on Tuesday. The Gaels (4-10) took on
Lafayette and Iona found a way to win in extra innings, 4-3. The
Maroon and Gold took the field in the afternoon and were on the other
side of the same score falling to Wagner, 4-3.
Iona got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Erin Kyle reached on an error and came around to score as Lolli Mills reached on an error to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kyle doubled to right field and Jessica Horvath, who finished 2-for-4, dropped a RBI single into right field. After Mills reached on a walk, Becky Riccitelli plated Horvath and the Gaels took a 3-0 lead.
The lead held until the top of the seventh inning as the Leopards (1-6) plated three runs on four hits to tie the game 3-3. The teams traded scoreless innings and the Gaels came up in the bottom of the eight with a chance to take the win. Riccitelli stood on second base and Courtney Christie brought her home on a sacrifice fly as Iona won 4-3. Amanda Berard pitched a complete game with three runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts in eight innings.
In the second game against Wagner, the Gaels were down early again. The Seahawks (4-8) took a 3-0 lead after the first two innings, but the Gaels chipped away at the lead. Kyle reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position on a passed ball before Horvath placed a triple down the left-field line to cut the lead to 3-1. Horvath came through again for the Maroon and Gold as she brought home a pair to tie at 3. Horvath finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Wagner, though grabbed the momentum and the game as Jaclyn Vanore hit a walk-off RBI single and the Seahawks stunned the Gaels 4-3. Amanda Glaser and Lolli Mills each went 1-for-4 and Melanie Gettins went 1-for-2 with a hit, a run, and two walks.
The Gaels are off on Wednesday and return to the field on Thursday, March 20 to face Lafayette and Saint Louis.
