Men's Swimming Opens Up Year With Dual Meet Wins

Yacobacci Wins Three Races, But Gaels Fall at SHU

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Despite winning six events, the Iona College men's swimming and diving squad fell to BIG EAST member Seton Hall University, 185.5-105.5, at the Arthur E. Imperattore Natatorium on Tuesday evening. 

Junior Chris Yacobacci led the Gaels with three first place individual races, first taking the 100-Breastroke at :58.94.  He then won the 200-Breaststoke completing the race in 2:08.58. The junior then took his third victory in the 200-IM, completing the four style race in 2:02.70. 

Sophomore Justin Grigull got a win in the 1,000-Free with a time of 10:08.07. Grigull continued to help the Gales, finishing third in the men's 200-Backstroke at 2:03.45. In his third race of the night, Grigull finished third in the 50-Free, finished just 40 tenths of a second behind the winner from Seton Hall at 22.73, in what was one of the best races of the night. 

Freshman Nick Kotonias finished third at 10:14.94.  Kotonias also placed second in the 200-IM at 2:07.91 and third in the 500-Free at 5:01.4. 

Sophomore Ryan Bacci and junior Marty Callinan gave their team a combined three points in the 200-Free, coming in fourth and fifth place, respectively.  Sophomore Mark Wallace edged out a Pirate swimmer for second place in the 100-Backstroke at 56.12 

Iona added more points to the team score in the 200-Butterfly, when sophomore Tyler Elfert placed third, finishing at 2:03.54.  He also took first in the in the 100-Butterfuly ending at 53.63.

When the dual meet took breaks, freshman James Cooney finished second in the one-meter diving event, scoring a 183.38 and then third place in the three-meter board at 168.75. 

In the opening medley race, the Iona team of Wallace, Yacobacci, Elfert and Bacci placed second in 1:40.20, and finally, in the 200-Free, the Iona “A, B and C” team swept the competition. 

The Gaels will head to Manhattan to take on the Jaspers in a MAAC dual on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
