Iona Swim & Dive Men Win; Women Second at ECAC Championships!

The Iona men have gone back-to-back ECAC Champions, Max Buchen named the Male Swimmer of the Meet and Head Coach Nick Cavataro was named Coach of the Meet.

EAST MEADOW, NY - In a strong display of team depth, the Iona Men's Swimming and Diving Team captured their second consecutive ECAC Winter Championship meet title as the Iona Women improved from the third spot in 2024 to take second place.
 
The Iona men totaled 1791.5-points in the 3-day NCAA Championship format event, 192.5 ahead of runner-up New Jersey Institute of Technology at 1,599. The University of Bridgeport (1374.5); Mount Saint Mary's (964.5); Adelphi (9380 and Long Island University rounded out the top six.
 
The Iona women posted 1,570-points for second, 182 behind Stony Brook University at 1752-points. Defending Champion Siena University fell to third at 1159.5 with Mount Saint Mary's (1137.5); Felician (747.5) and Long Island (676) rounding out the top six.
 
Iona Men's sophomore Max Buchen was named the male outstanding performer of the meet behind the strength of a pair of silver medals and a gold medal, including setting a new Iona team record Saturday in the 200-yard breaststroke at 1:58.51, breaking the team's oldest record set in 2012 by Chris Yacobacci of 2:00.30. 
 
Iona coach Nick Cavataro was named the Men's Coach of the year for the second year in a row.
 
On the women's side on Saturday night Iona took two gold medals. Sophomore backstroke specialist, Raegan O'Brien, narrowly missed by .03 the team record, winning by over 3 seconds at 2:01.57 in the 200-Backstroke. In the same race, Junior Julia Hulse took fifth at 2:07.10. 
 
Freshmen Sydney Cronin shocked the field from the outside lane, taking gold in the 200-Breaststroke at 2:20.60. Senior Brennyn Veit took bronze in the same race at 2:20.97, with sophomore Hailey Baker eighth at 2:28.05. 
 
Other Saturday men's action had Senior Matthew Woyksnar place seventh in the 1,650-Free at 16:12.11. Junior Noah Giunta took bronze in the 200-Backstroke at 1:47.61, with freshmen Wyatt Julian sixth at 1:54.89 and Woyksnar eight at 2:00.24. 
 
The Men's 100-Free had Junior Kieran Egan take second at 44.35, with classmate Harry Platt fifth at 45.14 and freshmen James Gonzalez eighth at 46.15. Junior Nate Wales exploded in the consolation final with a lifetime best effort of 44.69 for ninth.
 
The Men's 200-Butterfly had Giunta take silver at 1:51.99, with classmate Harry Platt seventh at 1:54.05.
 
Other action in the women's events saw Sophomore Mary Grace Waring take seventh in the 100-Freestyle at 52.00. The women's 200-Butterfly had freshmen Marissa Hengesbach take sixth at 2:08.86.
 
The 1,650-Freestyle had Anabel Huffstutler narrowly miss gold in a back-and-forth race with Stony Brook's Francesca Baber. Huffstutler took silver, 1.28 seconds behind at 17:28.64. Classmate Kate Kennedy (17:43.20); Senior Katherine Sarnes (17:58.84) and Marissa Hengesbach (18:04.46) were fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
 
The Iona Women closed out the scoring with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with O'Brien (54.04), Kate Kennedy (54.50), Paige Fiorino (53.75) and waring (51.64) clocking 3:33.93.
 
Tie Iona men took silver in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay at 3;00.34 as Egan (46.04), Gonzalez (44.78), Harry Platt (45.21) and Nate Wales (44.31) combined.
