Iona Swim Men Lead; Women Second After First Day of ECAC Meet

EAST MEADOW, NY - The first day of competition at the ECAC Winter Swimming and Diving Championships got off to a hot start, with the Iona Men taking a slim 7.5-point lead and the Iona Women trailing by 32-points, in the three-day event.
 
The meet, held at the Nassau County Aquatic Complex features 10 men's and 12 women's teams competing over the traditional three-day NCAA Championship format.
 
The Iona men tallied 526.5-points, to lead New Jersey Institute of Technology at 519. U of Bridgeport (408), Mount Saint Mary's (336), Long Island (291.5) and Adelphi (257) round out the top six.
 
The women's race has Stony Brook University ahead with 484.5 and Iona second at 452.5. Mount Saint Mary's (404); Siena (364), LIU (249) and Felician are in the top six.
 
The Iona men got a huge boost from the day's first final with sophomore diver Joel Picard (231.70) and Senior Dylan Riccio (229.85) taking gold and silver in the 3-Meter Springboard event. Sophomore Neil Senhouse was eight. The Iona men claimed two more golds with Junior Nick Patino winning the 50-yard Freestyle at 20.17. Teammates Nate Wales (20.46) and Kieran Egan (20.62) were fifth and seventh, respectively.
 
The final men's gold came on the last race of the night with Egan (48.59), Max Buchen (52.94), Noah Giunta (48.76) and Wales for a 3:14.40 clocking and the top spot.
 
Buchen and Giunta battled it out in the men's 200-Individual Medley with Buchen taking silver at 1:50.01 for a new school record that Giunta held at 1:50.24. Giunta took bronze at 1:50.25.
 
Other top eight finishers included 500-yard Freestyle swimmers Anabel Huffstutler (5:05.99) for fifth and Kate Kennedy (5:06.52) for sixth place.
 
The women's 200-Individual Medley was the team's most prolific individual event of the day with Raegan O'Brien (2:07.99), Sydney Cronin (2:09.24) and Brennyn Veit (2:09.33), placing third, fifth and sixth.
 
The Women's 200-Free relay quartet of Victoria Mordaunt (24.24), Kennedy (24.76), Paige Fiorino (24.54) and Mary Grace Waring (23.75) placed sixth at 1:37.27. Egan (20.46), Harry Platt (20.50), Nate Wales (19.96) and Patino (19.68) lowered the school mark to 1:20.60.
 
The meet continues Saturday with the 400-IM, 100-Butterfly, 200-Free, 100-Breast, 100-Back and womens 3-M diving, Men's 1-Meter diving and the 200-Medley and 800-Free Relays.
