WSWIM Takes MAAC Opener at Manhattan, 146-102

RIVERDALE, NY - After a tough loss earlier in the week at Seton Hall, the Iona women's swimming and diving team took the pool at Manhattan College for their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the year.  The Gaels won the first five events of the night and came away with a 146-102 over the Jaspers on Friday night.

The Iona 200-Medley Relay “A” team, continues to dominate in the pool and once again picked up a win in 1:54.50. Led by senior Jamie Manser, junior Theresa Harvey, and sophomores Maria Skeivys and Sophia Hyokyvaara, the Gaels came away with the race, completing the relay almost a second ahead of the Jaspers.

In the 1,000-Free Iona took first and second place, respectively, as junior Kara Nowakowski took first in 11:16.75. Freshman Ashley Bresnahan came in second just a second and a half behind her teammate.

The visitors added to the lead with first and second place finishes in the 100-Backstoke. Senior Mackenzie Mone and sophomore Brigitte Doughty controlled the tempo in the rac, as Mone finished at 1:59.67, while Doughty came in at 2:04.47. Both racers finished with enough breathing room in front of any Manhattan swimmer.

Iona added more victories in the 100-Backstroke with Manser finishing the race two seconds better then junior Zuzanna Michalak for the win. Michalak then took another second place finish in the 100-Breastroke, allowing Skeivys to take the win at 1:13.53.

Highlighting other finishes for the Gaels, Hyokyvaara and freshman Brittany Wallace took second and third, respectively, in the 200-Butterfly. Harvey won back-to-back races in the 50 and 100 freestyle.  In a quick three racer event, Doughty won the 200-Breastroke 13 seconds faster than the closest Jasper at 2:35.70.

In the last relay of the night, the Iona “A” team of Mone, Doughty, along with classmate Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff and freshman Olivia Kroll took the relay in 1:44.43.
