NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Marist rallied from a three-point, 12-9, deficit in the fifth and deciding set to defeat the Iona College Volleyball team 3-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. The Red Foxes defeated the Gaels with set scores 25-19, 15-25, 27-25, 19-25 and 15-13.
Sophomore MB
Catrina Warren led all performers with 19 kills and a .341 hitting percentage. She recorded six digs and four blocks in the loss. Junior OH
Alicja Pawelec posted a double double with 14 kils and 19 digs. Her classmate
Madisyn Spence also posted a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs.
Sophomore S
Caris Myles was the third Gael with double-digits in two statistical categories with 31 assists and 11 digs. She played in the first three sets of the match. Rookie S
Natalie Ziskin came on in the fourth and recorded 12 assists in two sets.
Marist was led by a quartet of hitters with nine or more kills. Katie Estes (15), Kelsey Lahey (14), Mackenzie Stephens (12) and Courtney Shaw (9) were responsible for 50 of the visitor's 60 kills. Libero Brooke Zywick had 36 digs while S Audra Brady had 48 assists, 14 digs, five blocks and three kills.
The first two sets proved one sided for each team. In the first, Marist took the lead for good after snapping a 5-5 tie, the only tie of the frame and won 25-19. Iona led wire-to-wire in set two, using a 12-5 run to end it after the Red Foxes pulled to within three.
The third set was the tightest of the five featuring nine ties and five lead changes. After Marist reached its first set point at 24-22, Iona rallied to knot the score at 24 with kills by Myles and Warren. The Red Foxes finally took the two-point advanage it needed to win the frame on their fourth set point on an Iona hitting error.
The fourth was all Iona again as they opened up an early 6-1 advantage and never looked back. Marist got to within two points at 18-16 but Iona closed out the set with seven of the final 10 points.
The Gaels started off strong in the decider, opening a 6-2 advantage. After a Red Fox time out, the visitors scored three straight points to close the margin to one. With the score tied at 7-7, Iona ran off three straight points to take command. Facing the 12-9 deficit, Marist rallied to tie at 13-13 and scored and continued a 4-0 run to end the match.
Iona is back in action tomorrow at the Hynes Center when they host Siena at 4:00 pm.
