NEW ROCHELLE - The Iona College men's swimming and diving team returned to action for their first home meet of the season at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels outscored St. Francis Brooklyn by a score of 148-89.
Seniors Ryan Bacci, Tyler Elfert, Justin Grigull, Nick Kotonias, Denis O'Connor and Mark Wallace were honored in a pregame ceremony recognizing their contributions.
The Gaels opened up the contest placing first and third in the 400 yard medley relay. The team of freshman Keegan Boisson-Yates, Bacci, Elfert, and freshman Matthew Rothman placed first with a time of 3:40.67. Sophomore Brandon Hadhazy, freshman Joseph Shields, freshman Liam Oberlander, and junior Connor Reid placed third with a time of 3:49.69.
In the 1000 Freestyle, Kotonias finished first with a time of 10:34.29, followed by freshman Bryan Veals in second with a time of 10:43.79.
The 200 yard freestyle was won by freshman Collin Purrman with a time of 1:46.92, followed by Elfert with a time of 1:48.30.
The Gaels swept the 50 yard freestyle, led by Grigull, who finished first with a time of 22.33. Rothman finished in second with a time of 22.54, and sophomore Tommy Keefe placed third with a time of 22.82.
In the 200 yard IM, Boisson-Yates placed first with a time of 2:04.78. Bacci finished third with a time of 2:08.77
Purrman placd first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.16, as Kotonias finished right behind with a time of 2:02.63.
Grigull placed first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.77.
Iona swept the 200 backstroke, led by Boisson-Yates with a time of 2:01.44. Hadhazy placed second with a time of 2:07:70, and Wallace finished third with a time of 2:09.44.
Freshman Bryan Veals placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.29. Freshman Jay Lessard finished in second with a time of 5:19.76.
In the 200 yard breaststroke, Purrman placed second with a time of 2:21.56.
The final event saw the Gaels place first and third in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Kotonias, Elfert, Bacci, and Grigull placed first with a time of 3:17.79. Finishing third was the team of Veals, Oberlander, O'Connor, and Wallace, with a time of 3:32.27.
The Gaels head down to Riverdale,NY November 2nd to take on the rival Jaspers.
