QUEENS, NY - The Iona College women's basketball was unable to get its offense in motion Tuesday evening, falling to St. John's 78-48 at Carnasecca Arena in an early season non-conference matchup. The Gaels were held to just 28.6% shooting in the contest, while the Red Storm connected on 48.5% of its attempts.

Iona was led by sophomore Joy Adams' 14 points and 15 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Junior guard Aleesha Powell had 12 points and three assists for the Gaels.

The Maroon & Gold was able to control the pace early, taking an 11-4 lead on a free throw by Powell with 14:22 left in the first half. From there, St. John's went on a 9-2 run, tying the game at 13 on a layup by sophomore Aliyyah Handford with 12:40 left. The Red Storm would then continue the run, scoring 12 of the next 14 points and grabbing a double digit lead, 25-15, with 8:09 in the period.

A jumper by Handford at the buzzer would give St. John's its biggest lead of the period, 41-26, going into halftime. The Red Storm would continue to produce in the second stanza, taking a 50-30 lead on a layup by Handford with 16:34 left. St. John's would then grab its biggest lead of the contest, 72-40, on another Handford layup.

The Maroon & Gold was victimized for 15 turnovers, while St. John's committed just four. The Red Storm would score 22 points off Iona miscues, and held a 48-10 advantage on points in the paint.

Handford scored a game high 32 points for the Red Storm and pulled down nine rebounds. Briana Brown was the other St. John's performer to tally double figures, scoring 13 points.

Iona is back in action Friday, when it host Pacific at the Hynes Athletics Center at 7:00 pm.
