ANNAPOLIS, MD - Sophomore forward Joy Adams connected for 22 points and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Iona College women's basketball team picked up a 64-61 victory over the United States Naval Academy Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Hall.
Adams scored 16 second half points for the Gaels, picking up her third straight double-double. Junior guard Damika Martinez scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Gaels were able to withstand 13 three-pointers from Navy, as the Midshipmen knocked down more shots from outside the arc than inside.
The Midshipmen picked up an early advantage in the contest, taking a 16-8 lead on a three-pointer by M.L. Morrison with 10:47 left in the first half. It was Navy's third trifecta of the first period. Iona answered with a 9-0 run on a trio of three pointers; a pair by sophomore forward Cassidee Ranger and one by Martinez. Navy would regain the lead 18-17, with 6:31 remaining, before Iona closed out the first half out on a 13-4 run, taking a 31-21 lead on a three by Martinez with 18 seconds left.
The Gaels were able to hold the Midshipmen to 19.5% shooting from the field in the first half, while Iona connected of 39.4% of its shots.
In the second half, Navy opened the stanza on a 15-8 run, cutting the Iona lead to three, 39-36, on a layup by Alix Membreno with 15:19 remaining.
The Midshipmen, would then cut the lead to two, 43-41, on another Membrano layup before Iona scored five straight points, pulling ahead by seven, 48-41, on a three pointer by redshirt senior guard Haley D'Angelo with 9:02 remaining.
Navy would counter with a 9-2 run, tying the game at 50 on a three by Kara Pollinger, and shortly after took the lead, 56-54, on a jumper by Audrey Bauer.
A jumper by senior center Sabrina Jeridore with 3:06 left tied the game at 54 before a layup by Adams with 2:29 put the Gaels ahead for good.
Iona was helped by Navy's inability to connect from the line, as the Midshipmen missed four free throws in the final minute of play. As Navy sent the Gaels to the line, Martinez knocked down six free throws in the final 35 seconds to help Iona secure the victory.
Chloe Stapleton led the Midshipmen with 18 points, connecting on six three pointers. Jade Geif had a team high 10 rebounds for Navy.
Iona is back in action Wednesday, when it hosts Wagner at the Hynes Athletics Center at 7:00 pm.
