SHELTON, CT - The Iona College men's rowing team competed at the 2014 Sacred Heart Spring Invitational on the on the Housatonic River. The Gaels competed against Fordham, Fairfield, Canisius, Robert Morris, Marist, SUNY Maritime and host Sacred Heart.
The Gaels top boat was Sunday's varsity pair. Junior Nicholas Adams and senior Rich Buchheit cruised to 28 second victory over SUNY Maritime with their 8:41.10 2,000-meter time.
Sunday's varsity and novice four boats earned second place finishes in their respective races. In the varsity event, Iona's "A" boat of freshman coxswain Kristen Stramka, sophomores Ryan Dronzek and Thomas McNulty, freshman Andrew Carley and senior Christopher Palma finished behind Maritime in 8:22.98. The "B" boat of freshman coxswain Carmine Corica, Adams, sophomore Brian Fairfield, junior Ryan Harding, and Buchheit was third in 8:31.80.
The novice four coxed by Corica consisted of freshmen Connor Galvin, Brandon O'Sullivan, Bradley Holmes, and Camden Chiasson and finished behind Maritime with a time of 8:27.40.
Saturday's varsity four boats finished third and fifth respectively. With Stramka as coxswain, Adams, Fairfield, Harding and Buchheit earned a time of 7:47.30. Corica coxed the "B" boat of junior Thomas Baik, sophomore Neiko Hicks, senior Ernest Stinebrickner and Chiasson and finished in 7:57.40.
Iona's top finish in the four other events it competed this weekend was fourth place in each. Saturday's varsity eight crew of junior coxswain Mary Cain, Buchheit, Harding, Carley, Palma, Dronzek, Chiasson, McNulty and Adams crossed in 7:15.37 behind Fairfield, Canisius and Fordham and ahead of Fairfield's "B" boat.
The novice eight of junior coxswain Michael McGannon, Holmes, Galvin, Sullivan, O'Sullivan, Corica and fellow freshmen Sean Dolan, Kyle Mosley and Michael McGlone finished with a time of 7:34.13, behind Maritime, Fairfield and Fordham and ahead of Maritime "B". The same was also fourth Sunday (7:32.30).
On Sunday, the Gaels two varsity eight crews finished fourth and sixth respectively. In one of the most exciting and tightest races of the day, just 1.9 seconds separated second through fourth place in the event. Stramka coxed the “A” boat of Buchheit, Harding. Carley, Palma, Dronzek, Chiasson, McNulty and Adams to a time of 7:23.80. The "B" boat crossed the line in 8:01.95 and consisted of McGannon, Holmes, Stinebrickner, Sullivan, Baik, Fairfield, O'Sullivan, Hicks and Galvin.
Carley and Dronzek took third place in Saturday's men's pair finishing with a time of 11:13.60 and behind Maritime and Fordham.
Iona is back in action next Saturday at the 2014 Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Glen Island Park.
