EDISON, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the 2015-16 Academic Honor Roll. Iona College increased its school record with 191 student-athletes on the list. It was the fifth highest among MAAC full-time and associate member schools. For the fifth straight year, first-year student-athletes completing two semesters at the institution were eligible for the list.
Nine Iona student-athletes maintained a 4.00 grade point average including men's cross country / track & field senior Kalen Sullivan, men's soccer senior Jacobo Aparicio, women's cross country / track & field graduate Tara Jameson, women's lacrosse sophomore Gabriella Di Domizio, senior Theodora Leitman and freshman Libby Miller, women's rowing junior Elise Tarrant and women's soccer sophomore Anna Higdon.
Twenty-three additional Gaels boast a GPA of 3.90 or higher. Senior Dana Andrea (water polo), sophomore Yaritza Ayala (rowing), junior Abraham Bluestone (rowing), senior Jon-Luke Ferrandino (soccer), senior Cassandra Gill (cross country / track & field), graduate Melissa Hawtin (cross country / track & field), sophomore John Hidalgo (rowing), sophomore Jason Hill (water polo), sophomore Rachel Landock (rowing), sophomore Demetra Laurent (swimming), senior Maria Lopez (swimming), senior Thomas McNulty (rowing), junior Dylan Mechanic (swimming), sophomore Courtney Miller softball), junior Darby Nevins (water polo), freshman Jessica Paolucci volleyball), sophomore Christine Rebus (soccer), freshman Jessica Schmidt (swimming), senior Sarah Schutz softball), freshman Sydney Thompson (swimming), senior Brittany Toro (water polo), senior Otis Ubriaco (cross country / track & field), and sophomore Megan Wood (soccer) each held the distinction.
A record 2,181 athletes were honored for their achievements both academically and athletically as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the 2014-15 MAAC Academic Honor Roll.
Iona surpassed its previous record of 184 set last year. The Maroon & Gold had 171 during the 2011-12 academic year and 168 members on the MAAC Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14.
To be eligible for the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, an athlete must hold a grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The Honor Roll is open to both full-time and associate members of the MAAC with athletes represented in all 25 sports that the conference sponsors.
Though not recognized on the MAAC Academic Honor Roll because the sport is not sponsored by the league, Iona men's water polo had eight student-athletes achieve a GPA of 3.20 or higher.
