RYE, NY - On Sunday, Sept. 25th, members of the Iona College men's and women's swimming & diving teams, along with the coaching staff, volunteered at the Westchester Triathlon. The triathlon is an annual event which raises thousands of dollars every year for various charities. All the raised funds went directly towards organizations such as, the Rye YMCA, the MAC angles foundation for ALS, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the challenged Athletes Foundation.
The Olympic distance race consisted of a 1500-meter swim, 25 kilometer bike, and 10 kilometer run. Members of the swim team were stationed along the bike course, guiding and encouraging participants as the embarked at the midway point of the race. Others served as lifeguards, patrolling the water on paddle boards, ensuring the safety of all participants.
Sophomore Demetra Laurent said, “I was along the bike path and I enjoyed being able to see all the participants as they came passing by. It was so inspiring to see all types of people competing in such a difficult event. The Westchester Triathlon is an amazing charity and love being able to help in any way that I can.”
Junior Alexandra DiBiase chimed in saying, “I am thankful to have the opportunity to support the community and see so many dedicated athletes participating in this charitable event. Seeing their determination as the make their way through the challenging course inspires me to be a better athlete”
