EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners on Tuesday, Jan. 2.  Freshman Toyosi Abiola of the Iona College women's basketball team has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season.

In the Maroon & Gold's opening conference contest at Niagara on Sat. Dec. 30, Abiola hit a career-high five three-point field goals on way to a 17-point outing. She played 39 minutes and shot 5-for-11 from the floor and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc while cashing in on two attempts from the charity stripe. Abiola tied a career-high with two assists and committed just one turnover.

Thus far this season the London, England native is averaging 12.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game.  Abiola ranks top 10 in the MAAC in four different statistical categories, including being top five in minutes per game (34.7), and three-point field goal percentage (38.9%).

The Gaels return to the hardwood on Tuesday night against Canisius at 7 p.m. and follow it up with a contest at Siena on Thursday, Jan. 4.
