NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's and women's swimming & diving team finished out the annual Iona Quad Invitational with three wins and just one loss. The unique four team format featured dual meet scoring across all the teams.
The Iona men easily handled the St. Francis Brooklyn by a score of 172-31 as the Iona women outdistanced the Terriers by a score of 135-88. The big win of the day for the Iona women came over Sacred Heart, which had maintained a three-year winning streak in New Rochelle until Saturday. The Gaels bested the Pioneers, 142-92.
The near upset of Wagner by the Iona women occurred after Iona spotted Wagner 32 diving points but closed to within 7-points going into the final individual event of the day. However, a Wagner 1-2-3 placing in the 200-yard butterfly, combined with a win in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay allowed the Seahawks to come out on top at 131-106.
"We are very pleased with our women today and their efforts in every event. To go head-to-head with three Northeast Conference teams and leave with three wins and turnaround a 2017 loss and take a team that beat us by 60-points last year and to close it to 25 is significant," commented first year assistant coach
Bryan Dorsey. Dorsey continued, "Our men swam smart and aggressive."
The Quad format which allowed for multiple heats and up to 24 swimmers in some events, saw only sophomore
Willow Lopez-Silvers take an overall first place for the Iona women, winning the 200-Freestyle at 1:56.27. Rookie
Kaylin McMahon, sophomore
Kate Flynn and senior
Maria DiBella all added second place points for the women.
On the men's side junior co-captain
Matt Anderson, sophomore
Conor Mullin and freshmen
Daniel Hadary continued their win streaks. All three earned two individual wins.
Anderson cruised to an easy win in the 1000-Freestyle at 10:09.54 and then bursted to a 4:47.37 win in the 500-Freestyle. Mullin took the 50-Free at 22.24 and the 200-Butterfly at 1:56.88. Hadary claimed the 100 and 200-Freestyle with respective times of 48.72 and 1:44.78.
Senior co-captain
Matthew Bosse took the 200-Back at 1:57.97 and Freshmen
Jackson Madonia won the 200-Breaststroke at 2:12.23. Freshmen
Jalen Ramjohn made his collegiate debut and took the 200-Individual Medley at 1:57.28. He also had key moments in the winning 400-medley and freestyle relays.
Iona's next meet is at home at the Hynes Center Pool when the Bryant Bulldogs visit New Rochelle, NY. The matchup is always a strong litmus test for the Gaels in comparison to the competitive MAAC rival.
