Culbertson And Timinskas Named To MAAC Basketball Honor Roll

Karen Culbertson and Mindaugas Timinskas were selected as this year’s representatives for the Maroon & Gold

EDISON, NJ – Iona College women's basketball and men's basketball alum Karen Culbertson '01 and Mindaugas Timinskas '97 have been named to the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Basketball Hall of Fame Honor Roll.

Honorees will be enshrined in "The MAAC Experience" exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 15. Each member institution of the MAAC honors one male and one female from its basketball "family" as part of the 2018 induction class. A dinner event takes place Saturday, September 15 at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams to recognize the Honor Roll inductees.

Each honoree will be profiled in the game program for the 2019 MAAC Basketball Championships and will be featured in a video display at "The MAAC Experience."

Karen Culbertson '01
Karen Culbertson is one of the most prolific scorers in Iona women's basketball history and played four seasons from 1997-2001. At the time of her graduation, she ranked third and is currently No. 6 all-time in program history with 1,456 career points. Additionally, Culbertson ranks in the top 10 all-time in career scoring average (13.3), three-point field goals (147), three-point field goal attempts (443), free throws (372), and free throw attempts (440). Culbertson was named All-MAAC First Team as a junior in 2000 due in large part to her proficiency from the charity stripe. She shot 87.8%, the third-highest single-season percentage in Iona history. A four-year All-MAAC selection, Culbertson was named all-rookie as a freshman, to the third team as a sophomore and second team as a senior.

Mindaugas Timinskas '97
Mindaugas Timinskas was a four-year standout for Iona from 1993-1997 culminating in a MAAC Player of the Year accolade in 1997. He was part of back-to-back MAAC regular season championships in 1996 and 1997.  Timinskas graduated as the No. 7 all-time scorer in Iona men's basketball history and currently ranks No. 11 with 1,617 points. Additionally, he ranks top 10 all-time in field goal attempts (1,276) and three-point field goals attempts (383). Throughout Timinskas career, he averaged 14.3 points, 2.3 assists, 6.4 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.  He was a three-time All-MAAC selection on the all-rookie squad in 1994, second team in 1995 and first team during his player of the year campaign in 1997.  He was a seven-time MAAC Player of the Week honoree, the most prolific in Iona history.

Upon his graduation from Iona, Timinskas played professional basketball in Lithuania and Spain. He also played for the Lithuanian senior national team, earning a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Lithuania had a chance to upset Team USA in the semifinal round in a game where Timinskas netted 11 points and three rebounds in the narrow two-point defeat. Timinskas finished his basketball career a three-time Lithuanian LKL Champion, one-time LKL finals MVP and one-time All-Star Game MVP.
