NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona College men's soccer head coach
James Hamilton has announced the addition of two mid-year enrollees to the team. The Gaels, fresh off of the first MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, have added Julian Cabanillas and Federico Russo.
JULIAN CABANILLAS
A College Point, New York native, Cabanillas joins Iona after spending his freshman season at Queensborough Community College. Cabanillas appeared in 12 contests, making 10 starts for the Tigers. In his second game of the season, he scored a goal and assisted on a score, registering three points in an 8-1 victory.
Cabanillas scored twice in Queensborough's eventual 5-4 loss to the Borough of Manhattan Community College in the 2019 CUNY Championship. Cabanillias totaled five goals and three assists (13 points) for the season.
Prior to his time at QCC, Cabanillas played with BW Gottschee Academy from 2015-18. He appeared in 56 matches, recording nine goals, eight of which came with the U-18/19 squad.
FEDERICO RUSSO
Russo joins the Iona program after two seasons at Lindenwood University. Russo appeared in 33 matches, making 28 starts for the Lions. In his sophomore season, Russo played in and started in all but two matches as a midfielder/defender.
Russo registered 14 shots, two on net, across his two seasons. The Caracas, Venezuela native was a part of five clean sheets for the Lions. Prior to Lindenwood, Russo attended Academia Washington in Venezuela. He played his club soccer with Estudiantes de Caracas.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"Julian is a direct and creative attacker who is exciting to watch. He can get at teams from either wing and will be a great option for us going forward." - Hamilton on Cabanillas.
"Federico is an accomplished and adaptable midfielder whose style of play should allow for a seamless transition. We're excited to see how much better we can be with him as part of the squad." - Hamilton on Russo.
