BUFFALO, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team came back late to earn a draw at Canisius on Wednesday evening.
Nathaniel David's 89th minute goal leveled the match at 3-3 with just over a minute to play, allowing the Maroon & Gold to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches to open conference play.
MATCH SUMMARY
The high-scoring match opened up with Iona in front following Aly Camara's goal in the fourth minute. Camara promptly found the back of the net and followed it with a celebration punctuated by a backflip. Just about 17 minutes later, Canisius would even the score at one apiece.
After a scoreless rest of the opening half, the final 45 minutes featured four goals, two on each side, including David's late game-tying score. Just over seven minutes into the second half, Ricardo Senen Pinillos would give Iona a lead for the second time in the match. Thiago Cagna lofted a ball over a defender and despite being denied on his first attempt, Senen Pinillos gathered his rebound and finished off the first goal of his collegiate career. The Gael lead lasted all of 80 seconds before the Golden Griffins again tied the match.
Canisius finally broke through for a third goal, and its first lead of the match, in the 87th minute. The initial shot beat Juan Alfaro Monge, striking the post and bounding out to Julius Schoner who blasted a shot into the back of the net with just under four minutes to play. Iona showed resilience, as Jose Silva and David teamed up to bring Iona back and earn a 3-3 draw on the road in Buffalo.
